Kentucky Archaeology Month in September is a month long celebration of creating opportunities for and awareness of preserving Kentucky’s archaeological resources, such as Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site.
Visit Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site in September (2020) and support the preservation and protection of the site – a Native village of the Mississippian culture, occupied 1100 to 1350 AD. The Wickliffe village site consists of earthen mounds and buildings, situated around a central plaza, located on a natural bluff overlooking the Mississippi river.

The site was developed in the 1930’s by a private owner and opened to the public as a museum and tourism attraction. In the 1980’s, the site became an archaeological research center and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, Wickliffe Mounds is a state historic site and has a museum, welcome center, gift shop, interpretive trails, and picnic areas.

Open Wednesday through Sunday, 9:00 to 5:00, stop by the Welcome Center for admission and pick up a Scavenger Hunt that Leaves No Trace, and take a self-guided tour of the mounds, museum and trails. See exhibits of Mississippian cultural lifeways, artifacts and the site’s archaeological history. Site interpreters tell the story of the Mounds at Wickliffe. We acknowledge that Wickliffe Mounds is located on Native Land that was the homeland of the Chickasaw Nation.

Covid-19 precautions are masks and social distancing, along with limited capacity inside buildings.
